A look back
In order to understand the importance of Industry 4.0 automation in its scope, let us take a look back first. The historic industrial revolution had its beginning at the end of the 18th century. It began with the mechanization of production plants by steam engines and hydroelectric power and culminated in electrification at the end of the 19th century and thus in the 2nd Industrial Revolution. Within 100 years, industry had developed so far that the first assembly lines were already in use.
The 3rd Industrial Revolution was not long in coming. At the beginning of the 1970s, automation began with the help of electronics and IT. Today, German mechanical engineering is in the early stages of Industry 4.0 - the age of networking.

After steam engines, assembly lines, electronics and IT, the so-called intelligent factories are now moving industry and producers. Due to the increasing digitalization of society, markets and the economy, a process has taken place in industry. Industry 4.0 thus describes the merging of the digital world with production to get automated production lines.
